We plan to upgrade our trees service tonight, adding some fancy new hardware and software. We expect that the service will be unavailable for about 2 hours starting around 1:00 AM mountain time.
This tree service downtime will affect Member Trees, OneWorldTree, some portions of My Canvas, the sections of the Home Page that are related to Member Trees, and the sections of MyFamily.com 2.0 that are related to Member Trees. Other than that, other areas of the site will remain functional.
Have you ever wondered who keeps the service running for you? Here’s a list of the key players tonight and their roles:
- Pause agents (Steve B. will have these paused by 1am)
- Turn off replication (Kelland)
- Take Tree Service offline (Greg)
- Switch database to read-only (Kelland)
- Backup/Restore all transaction logs (Kelland)
- Take all Tree Service web servers out of the vip except one (Becca)
- Change Web.Config settings — including TreeDB1 (Greg & Becca)
- Bring TreeDB1 online (Kelland)
- Test (Chuck)
- Service Broker check / CLR Stored Proc
- Bring Tree Service online (Greg)
- Start agents (Steve B.)
- SQL Jobs (Kelland & Greg)
- Setup Replication (Kelland)
While these folks don’t expect any special thanks for keeping our wonderful trees system running, I am personally glad that they do it. Thanks, Team.

Many of you, in fact almost four thousand of you, have already attached DNA to your online family tree. As you know, this translates into a much larger potential for people finding and connecting to your family tree. As more people add their results, the Ancestry.com DNA database becomes a powerful asset toward making connections and family tree discoveries. With 8.3 million family trees containing 810 million profiles, adding DNA results to a family tree multiplies your chance of finding and making connections with genetic cousins and extending branches along your family tree. The four thousand DNA attachments spans over seventy-one thousand ancestors with inferred DNA!
I’ve received some comments on the blog about attaching “someone else’s” DNA to a user’s tree. This is not a difficult process. To have the DNA of someone else represented in your tree, you first need to invite him/her to your tree. Here’s how:
· After logging into your Ancestry.com account, find “view all my trees” in the “My Trees” menu.
· Then simply “invite family” to the desired tree. Be sure to assign a role of either “Contributor or “Editor” to the invited person (this will allow him/her to both view and edit your tree and attach his DNA.
· DNA will be designated on the person profile page as is illustrated in these screen shots (#1 profile page for self; #2 profile page of individual propagated up the tree).

Should the other person need help, you could login on his/her behalf and attach his/her DNA. Attaching your DNA results helps others find your family tree through DNA. Furthermore, attaching and propagating your DNA results will help others find and confirm a connection to your family tree.
